Medication Assisted Therapies in Massachusetts

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program in Massachusetts

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Addiction

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a highly effective form of addiction treatment that involves the use of medication in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies.  A MAT treatment approach is especially beneficial for individuals struggling with moderate to sever opioid, drug, or alcohol disorders who may have tried multiple abstinence -based programs without success. The medications used in MAT are designed to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while also blocking the effect of the drug or substance being abused.  This enables patients to focus on their recovery and engage in therapy and other supportive services more successfully.

What individuals are ideal for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT):

A good candidate for medication-assisted treatment is someone who has been struggling with moderate to sever opioid, drug or alcohol addiction.  They may have previously tried other addiction recovery programs without success.  Individuals who experience strong, persistent cravings and are unable to remain drug or alcohol free are typically good fits for medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

What To Expect

How Medication Assisted Treatment Works Best

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is not intended to be used as a singular form of treatment. It is most effective when used in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies. These additional therapies can help people develop coping skills, address underlying issues contributing to substance use, and make positive changes in their lives. Counseling may include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, or a combination of these approaches. Behavioral therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and contingency management (CM) are commonly used along with MAT to reinforce positive behaviors and promote recovery.

MAT has become an effective way to reduce the risk of relapse and overdose. Opioid addiction, in particular, has a high relapse rate, with many individuals returning to drug use after detoxification. But research has shown that MAT significantly improves treatment retention, reduces illicit drug use, and decreases the risk of overdose and mortality. By stabilizing individuals and reducing cravings, MAT provides a foundation for long-term recovery.
