When the path is smooth, progress is easy.

Healthy Living for Drug Addiction and Alcoholism

Managing alcohol use disorder or substance use disorder doesn’t always require a major time commitment.

People at our Healthy Living level have been successfully managing their alcohol use disorder or substance use disorder successfully. They are not in crisis, but want professional support as they maintain the sobriety and psychological gains they have made while facing new issues, and to continue to move forward - to understand themselves better, heal old wounds, strengthen their relationships, and find meaning in their lives. So they participate in one or two Sameem services per week.

Some people enter aftercare at this level of support and stay there; others step down to this level from a higher level of support when the time is right.

Long-term Healthy Living with Alcoholism or Substance Use Disorder

People come into Healthy Living with alcoholism or drug abuse in discomfort rather than crisis. Alcohol or other drugs may have been a major problem in the past. They may be living with a co-occuring disorder like anxiety, depression, or stress.

They may want guidance and support staying mentally healthy, connected, and sober. Or they may feel a need for forward motion - to understand themselves better, heal old wounds, strengthen their relationships, and find meaning in their lives.  Or they may want to focus on a particular issue for a time - their relationship with their professional life, developing a sense of comfort in their own skin.

Some people enter at this level of support and stay there; others transition from a higher level of support when the time is right.

Some people may move between Healthy Living and higher levels of support in times of crisis.

Whatever their goals, most people in Healthy Living grow in the these areas:

  • Reduced chance of serious relapse for those with substance use disorder
  • Increase in self understanding and ability to regulate emotions and behavior
  • Stronger connections to friends and family
  • Optimism about the future and gratitude for the present
  • Ability to achieve goals they set for themselves
  • Clients in the Healthy Living program participate in one or two Sameem services a week.

Recovery from Alcoholism and Drug Addiction - What does this look like?

A Healthy Living program for people suffering from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) can take many forms. Here are some common schedules:

  • Individual therapy only
  • A therapeutic group weekly and individual therapy twice a month
  • Two therapeutic groups and medication management services
  • Family counseling and a therapeutic group

Here are some examples of people in the Healthy Living stage

Jasmine

Jasmine is new.

She’s a first-time parent, dealing with a number of life changes and possible depression.

She attends couples therapy with her husband once a week and attends a therapeutic group with other women.

Henry

Henry has been at Sameem since high school, when he was using a number of substances. He’s now in his twenties, sober, and employed. He attends a long-term therapeutic group that’s been together for years.

Sam

Sam’s a high school student whose parents were worried about his substance use.

At Sameem, it became clear that he was self-medicating his anxiety. Now he’s in family counseling and attends a therapeutic group to address his anxiety.

Erin

Erin transitioned into Sameem from an in-patient detox to a higher level of support at Sameem during the pandemic.

Sober and no longer depressed, she attends an ongoing therapeutic group weekly.
