3LC - Enhanced Support

When the path is uphill, you need an extra hand

Enhanced Support for Drug Addiction and Alcoholism

Maybe drug abuse or alcohol use disorder hasn’t been a problem recently - or ever. Maybe you’ve been on a smooth path but a job loss, aging parents, or the prospect of going off to college has changed the landscape. Sometimes you need a higher level of support. Or maybe you’ve been treating your drug abuse or alcohol disorder in a more intensive program and are ready to step down to an aftercare level of support – but gradually.

The Enhanced Support program includes three to five one-hour services per week, as needed. Programs are always individualized to meet individual needs. Aftercare Enhanced Support Programs for Alcoholism or Drug Abuse

People are in Enhanced Support for many reasons. They may need frequent support because drug abuse, alcohol disorder, or a mental health program has increased due to a current crisis challenge. But they are participating in their current jobs, schools, family, and community lives in a fairly normal pattern, and expect to need less support as when the crisis passes, whether it’s next week or next summer Or they’ve been in a more intensive program recently but now need aftercare rather than the higher level of support of an Intensive Outpatient Program for alcohol or drug abuse.  Or they need Enhanced Services indefinitely to stay well or sober.

Their goals are individual. They may want help in understanding and processing their reactions or interactions with others. Or they may need support in using newly-developed skills, like setting boundaries and regulating emotions while under stress.

Whatever their individual goals, most people in Enhanced Support grow in these areas:

  • Reduced chance of serious relapse for those with substance use disorder
  • Confidence that they can manage life circumstances
  • Ability to maintain and strengthen connections to friends and family in challenging circumstances
  • Increase in self-understanding, ability to regulate emotions and behavior when under stress

Here are some examples of people in the Enhanced Support stage

Andrea

Andrea is in the middle of a professional crisis that triggered her anxiety and depression.

She entered Sameem at this level and attends individual therapy twice weekly as well as therapeutic groups for trauma and a women’s group.

She expects to need less support within a few months.

Casey

Casey spent weeks in an in-patient unit for depression, then transitioned to a high level of services at Sameem.

They’re doing well and need less support. They currently attend three therapeutic groups where they developed strong relationships with other members and an individual session each week. They will stay at this level as long as they need to.

Henry

Henry has been in a therapeutic group at Sameem for several years. After his wife’s recent diagnosis of MS, his daughters were struggling and Henry felt his family needed additional help.

He began individual therapy and couples therapy at Sameem. After a few weeks, they added family therapy.

Nick

Nick is a high school student who was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning and ended up in rehab.

He was motivated to get back to school in order to graduate on time. He came into Sameem at the Enhanced Support level, where he attends a therapeutic group or individual therapy every day after class.
