Couples and Family Therapy in Massachusetts

Couples and Family Therapy in Massachusetts for Addiction Treatment

At Sameem Behavioral Health, we understand that addiction doesn't just affect the individual struggling with substance use disorder (SUD); it affects the entire family and support network. That's why we offer comprehensive couples and family therapy services designed to address the complex dynamics of addiction within relationships. Our addiction and alcoholism treatment approach recognizes the vital role that family members and partners play in the recovery process and aims to strengthen these relationships while promoting lasting sobriety.

Supporting Addiction Recovery Through Couples/Family Therapy

Alcoholism and drug addiction often strain relationships and create tension within families. Our couples and family therapy services provide a safe and supportive space for individuals and their loved ones to address these challenges and work towards healing together. Whether you're seeking therapy as a couple or a family unit, our addiction and alcoholism treatment programs include specialized sessions for you - regardless whether you are in our Intensive Outpatient Program, or have stepped down to our Enhanced Support level, or are just coming a time or two per week as part of our Healthy Living services. Our experienced therapists are here to guide you every step of the way.

Couples Therapy in Addiction and Alcoholism Treatment

Couples therapy focuses on improving communication, rebuilding trust, and strengthening the bond between partners. Addiction almost always erodes intimacy and creates barriers to honest communication, leading to resentment and conflict. Our therapists help couples explore underlying issues, identify unhealthy patterns, and develop healthier ways of relating to each other.

Through structured sessions and evidence-based techniques such as Family Systems Therapy or Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), couples can learn to navigate challenges together, support each other, and rebuild a strong foundation for their relationship.

Particularly when addiction or alcoholism have damaged trust, reestablishing the ability to communicate effectively is crucial. Simple requests and expectations can seem like support from the person in a support role, but can feel like an accusation for the person who is managing Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

Family Therapy in Addiction and Alcoholism Treatment

Family therapy extends beyond the couple relationship to include other family members, who have also been affected by addiction. Our family therapy sessions provide an opportunity for open dialogue, expression of emotions, and reconciliation within the family system. We address issues such as codependency, enabling behaviors, and boundary-setting to promote healthier family dynamics.

Family therapy also empowers family members to play an active role in their loved one's recovery journey. By fostering understanding, empathy, and support, families can become a source of strength and stability for their loved one as they navigate the challenges of addiction recovery.

Integrated Family Approach in IOP for Alcoholism or Addiction

In addition to standalone couples and family therapy sessions, we also integrate these services into our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our IOP provides a structured treatment environment where individuals receive intensive therapy and support while continuing to live at home and engage in daily activities.

Couples and family therapy sessions within the IOP setting allow participants to address relational issues in real-time and receive support from peers who understand their struggles. These sessions may focus on communication skills, conflict resolution, and coping strategies for navigating challenges as a family unit.

IOPs typically have 3-hour per day sessions, most often broken into three sessions of 1 hour each. In this Intensive Outpatient Program for addiction or alcoholism setting, the typical approach would be to

Enhanced Support Services for Addiction and Family Therapy

For individuals who want to continue care after discharge from our IOP, our addiction aftercare Enhanced Support Services or Long-term Health Living programs offer continued access to couples and family therapy. These services are tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals and their families as they transition to a lower level of care.

Enhanced Support services may include regular therapy sessions, participation in support groups, and access to additional resources and interventions as needed. Our goal is to provide comprehensive support that addresses the multifaceted nature of addiction and promotes long-term recovery for individuals and their families.
